Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte are officially back in our lives with this Sex and The City reboot, and they’ve got company. Joining the original cast (minus Kim Cattrall’s Samantha Jones) are Nicole Ari Parker, Karen Pittman, Sara Ramírez and Sarita Choudhury—all women of colour and all ready to bring a much needed counterpoint to the story. This comes through not just in their identity but also personality and of course, fashion and style. But there’s one other thing in And Just Like That that tells us a little more about who these women are, and it’s jewellery.

First up, playing socialite mom Lisa Todd Wexley, Nicole Ari Parker was the first to be introduced and left a big impression straight out the gate. Meeting the trio at their weekly brunch sesh, her bohemian chic ensemble was nothing if not flawless. But what really stood out were her jewellery choices. That ultra chunky cable chain necklace from Danish jeweller Monies is all everyone wants to talk about but interestingly it was her bracelet that got Carrie’s attention. Though that’s hardly surprising given Carrie’s love for all things vintage.
While technically not a vintage bracelet, it is however handmade with vintage embroidered silk and brooches from the ‘50s by Rianna and Nina (no, it’s not really by a 20-year-old from Jackson Mississippi). Together with chunky rings from different jewellers including South African designer Ana Srdic, she completes her look with a bicolour Bulgari Serpenti Tubogas watch in rose gold and steel.

“My character has wonderful taste in jewellery,” Parker says in an interview with Vogue, revealing also that Lisa Todd Wexley’s (or LTW according to Charlotte) weakness for bling was among the most enjoyable parts of playing her. She credits show costume designer Molly Rogers for the exquisite curation. What’s particularly enjoyable for the audience is seeing how effortlessly she piles on chunky accessories without ever looking too much. What is her secret?
In later episodes, she pulls off clashing colours and accentuates the look with an eclectic bracelet stack from New York jeweller Mark Davis who’s known to skilfully combine traditional gold and gemstones with unusual materials such as vintage bakelite. Her broad jewellery palate also includes statement rings by Ghanaian-born jewellery designer Emefa Cole, and whimsical earrings by Caribbean jeweller We Dream In Colour.
At the And Just Like That premier in New York, though, Parker stays perfectly coordinated with a shimmering red carpet ensemble in full yellow gold right down to the scintillating clutch and those megawatt jewels by Cartier.
Who else is a fan of ethnic and handcrafted jewellery? Fellow actress Karen Pittman who plays Dr. Nya Wallace, a professor at Columbia Law heading up Miranda’s human rights law class. In stark contrast to LTW’s Manhattan Park Avenue glamour, Dr. Wallace is all about an authentic street style that’s perfectly at home in Brooklyn. Oversized hoops and shoulder-dusting tassels, natural stone rings, vegetable tanned leather cords, and the occasional chain-link necklace and earrings in gold—recycled of course—and a vintage timepiece probably worn for sentimental reasons make it into Pittman’s character’s jewellery edit.

Joining the fray as well is Sara Ramirez, who plays Che Diaz, a stand-up comedian and podcast host with a show on sex and sexuality that Carrie is starting to be a part of. The show’s first non-binary queer character, she’s a straight-talking New Yorker with a wicked sense of humour and a fashion style that favours the coolest streetwear threads. Along with that sleek buzz cut and numerous tats, edgy jewellery is the other thing Diaz never leaves home without. Curb-chain necklaces, single ear studs, padlock pendants, and multiple ear cuffs all in silver or white gold, + Plus trendy oversized timepieces are all the things that would not look out of place in her wardrobe.
Finally, we come to the fourth addition to the new cast members of And Just Like That, and it is Sarita Choudhury. But while her character, Seema Patel, a powerhouse real estate broker living in Manhattan, has yet to make her first appearance in the show, we already know a few things about her through her jewellery choices. True to her South Asian roots, Patel is a big fan of gold jewellery especially pieces that are expertly sculpted and from brands that have unrivalled cachet in their field. A vintage brooch by Parisian marque Verdura in one scene, and a modern Candy ring with turquoise and amethysts by the same label in another. Next, a gold Cartier Panthere bracelet and a Cartier Tank watch not on leather but a solid gold bracelet… Patel is definitely old money, definitely a self-made woman, and we can’t wait to see what she, and the other three new cast members, will bring to the story.
And Just Like That streams on HBO Max from 9th December.
